This week I kept on working on the transitions and the couple songs that I have been learning for the past couple weeks. Something that I have found interesting is that after practicing the chords for extended periods of time, then I am able to play some without even looking at the guitar. That may not seem like much but I am extremely happy with that. Another thing that I have found cool is that when I listen to songs on the radio, I am able to kind of tell what chords are used to play the songs, as well as the strumming pattern for the songs. It is so impressive what some people can do with a guitar and just musical instruments in general. I didn't realize the true skill behind playing the guitar until I have started to try and play myself. I had a lot of fun learning the basics over the course of this week. My dad was a big help in demonstrating and walking me through how to do a lot of the hand shapes and the transitions between different chords. It was kind of difficult to make the shapes with my hands at first and even when I got the shapes right it sometimes did not sound right because I was messing up on something else, but after some repetition and practice they became to feel more natural and I became more fluid with my transitions. Over the course of the week I have learned the G chord, the A chord, the D chord, the C chord, and the E chord. I have learned to transition between each and every chord. Learning this has allowed me to play a few songs which I was very surprised because I thought that would be coming much later over the course of this 12 week project. I am able to play "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show, and I am also able to play "Greatest Love Story" by LANCO. I am aware that these are pretty basic songs to play but in my first week of playing guitar I am not complaining at all. I am already working on a few more songs that hopefully by next week I will be able to complete. I am probably going to post some sort of demonstration on you tube this week and post that on this website that way you can view my progress as well as see what I am working on for next week. My progress so far excites me for what is to come by the end of the twelve weeks. I am hoping to continue to progress my skills each week and learn new things every week.
.Hi my name is Hunter Meacham. The name of my project is "Learning The Chords". I chose this title because I believe that it was simple, it rolled off the tongue well and also hit the main point of my Genius Hour Project. I am going to have Chris Meacham, my dad, be my mentor during this twelve week process of learning how to play guitar because he has experience playing guitar, and he is enthusiastic about me learning to play guitar as well. My goal by the end of this project is to be able to learn chords and transitions when playing guitar. I would also like to possibly be able to play a few songs at the end with no errors. I think that this will be a challenging task because it tests your hand eye coordination as well as your muscle memory. I will mostly be using my dads acoustic guitar during this process, but I may get an acoustic guitar of my own due to the fact that I would like to continue learning guitar after the project has ended. I think I may try to attach some video or audio content of me learning and playing chords week by week. I am thinking on spending a few hours a week learning and completing my project because I will need to do that to accomplish my goal. I chose this project idea because I was already wanting to learn how to play guitar and this was just a motivation to do that. I plan to continue learning how to play guitar after the project because I think it would be very fun to be able to play songs I know and also possibly think up some stuff to play myself, but that's far into the future, right now I'm just starting out.
